Can We Break Free?

Every morning we start afresh. We start afresh but end up, very quickly, being caught up in the same narrative. The people and objects around us force us back into the skin we left at the bedside the night before. We say, stuck in a rut but we mean, stuck in a story of our own making.

Can we break free?

Probably not.

What if the rut you are stuck in is just who you are? What if the only reason you feel stuck is because you are different from everyone else and want only to be like them – to be accepted? If this is the case, then the only way to get out of the rut is to become someone you are not. That will never work. You will feel empty, you would have sold yourself out for an easy life.

The path you are on, the rut you are in, is unique. It has never been trod before and it will never be trod again. You make it what it is.

Start afresh but stick to the same path.

People and objects can change. Sometimes they must. Wear your skin, your story, with confidence. Most of us are not the sole author of our lives. So much of who we are comes from our past experiences, and chance encounters with others. Chance is a great artist. You are your story and you must find the best way to tell it. You will not be able to do this if you deny the story you have become.

Life and language are two of the greatest gifts you will ever be given. Treat life as if it were fragile and sacred. Treat language as if it were an innocent child.

It is better to have a few true friends than a busload of acquaintances who wave and smile when they see you but who do not really care.

So, today, sit down on a patch of grass, feel the ground beneath your bum, watch a few ants scuttle about and the trees rock graciously in the short breeze, listen to the sound that envelopes you: the birds, insects, tractors, lorries… look up at the clouds moving slowly across the blue sky and if you are fortunate, you will encounter the wonderful aloneness of being a free mind.

It is not easy being you because there is only one of you.

You need to love your aloneness. All those things you dream of: fame, fortune, acceptance… you seek only because you want to escape your lonely uniqueness. You cannot.

I enjoy experimental writing. I do not see myself ever fitting in with, and following, the standard literary route. I am a creative writer which means I like to experiment with words, styles and platforms.
